Homes from hemp: a more sustainable way to build

Since 2023, the Net Zero Innovation Fund from Suffolk’s Public Sector Leaders has provided £100k worth of grants to businesses in Suffolk who are creating a more sustainable way of doing things in their industry. A fantastic example of this is Modece Architects who are exploring a more sustainable alternative to timber in construction. Scroll down to hear from Matt Bell, Director and Architect at Modece Architects, as he shows us their newest research.

Thanks to the Net Zero Innovation Fund, Matt and his team were able to build a workshop to develop their research into sustainable building materials. They are now creating larger scale prototypes of their work to prove their concept of replacing timber with hemp stalk before building a full-scale home.

Last year, they were also able to plant and harvest their own crop of hemp to use in their prototypes, meaning they are now able to see their method from planting all the way through to building.
