A big day for community action

On Saturday 8th November, more than 60 amazing volunteers from environmental groups across Suffolk came together for the Sustainable Communities Action Day.

It was a day full of sharing ideas, learning new skills, and celebrating the brilliant work happening in towns and villages across the county.

People at the event are working on all kinds of projects – from creating wildlife-friendly spaces and checking river health to giving advice on saving energy at home and running local energy schemes.

The morning started with talks on three big topics:

  • Climate community hubs – places where people can work together on climate action.
  • Wildlife resilience – helping nature thrive even as the climate changes.
  • Communicating well – reaching more residents and inspiring action.

In the afternoon, everyone joined one of four workshops:

  • Biodiversity (protecting plants and animals)
  • Community energy
  • Water and rivers
  • Energy efficiency in older buildings

Experts and experienced community members shared their stories and tips, and there was plenty of time for everyone to swap ideas.

The feedback was fantastic! Many people said they’d love more events like this, especially for learning about communication and how to encourage behaviour change.

By sharing knowledge and supporting each other, Suffolk’s community groups are helping to build a more sustainable future.
